I've created this platform as a simple guideline to anyone that is interested in rock, alpine or ice climbing and wondering how to get started. It can be intimidating entering a new sport and seeking a community that is welcoming to beginners. Through the course of my learning, I've found the best environments to be in guided courses. Guided courses are often organized for participants at the same or similar skill level which removes a lot of pressure. I've had clients come to me hesitant about taking a course by themselves and I think there's a lot of personal growth that comes from putting yourself in those situations. I've made many good friends taking courses solo and it's a great way to find potential climbing partners. I always encourage continuing education in any discipline you're interested in.
With rock climbing becoming more and more popular, there are many people wondering where to start. Although it's possible to start outdoors, I recommend new climbers begin at a climbing gym. There are many benefits to starting indoors in a controlled environment and gyms offer a range of courses from basic climbing techniques to lead climbing. It's important to build up your strength and listen to your body when you're first getting into the sport. Many climbers make the mistake of pushing grades before their skill matches their strength, resulting in injury. Having good form on the wall will not only help you progress but also keep you safe. If you do decide to begin outdoors, the first step is to find a guide. Look into your local guide services or REI to find an into to rock climbing course.
Alpine climbing is inherently dangerous. When climbing in this style, one uses a wide range of techniques to gain a summit. Climbers will carry the bare minimum of technical gear, and rely mostly on a deep skill base, adaptability, and good decision making. It's imperative to have a strong background in rock climbing, ice climbing, snow skills, and glacier travel before heading out into these environments. If you've done a bit of guided mountaineering and are seeking knowledge to get out there on your own, it's best to take a mountaineering seminar and courses like crevasses rescue to dial in those skills.
If you're completely new to mountaineering and want to see what it's all about, there are beginner level climbs like the Easton Glacier or Coleman Deming routes on Mt. Baker in Washington. Mt. Baker is a 10,781' volcano located in northern Washington. It's the fourth largest peak in the Northwest and is home to the second largest glacier system in the lower 48! If you're looking for a little more of a challenge, a good next step would be the Dissapointment Cleaver route on Mt. Rainier, Washington's largest peak.

Ice climbing. It's not as terrifying as it looks. In fact, many people would say that beginner level ice climbing is less frightening than beginner level rock. Although a lot of techniques transfer over from rock to ice, there is a steady flow that you'll gain through repetitive laps on nice. Similar to rock climbing, the best way to get started is by finding a guide and getting out in an area designated for learning. Ouray, Colorado, located in the San Juan range of southwestern Colorado is home to the world famous Ouray Ice Park. The park offers new ice climbers plenty of routes to top rope on to hone in their skills.
